Hanwha Ocean and the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonization (GCMD) established a five-year strategic cooperation to promote maritime decarbonization in the fields of onboard carbon collection, energy efficiency technology, and alternative low-carbon fuels.
Along with expanding its reach to South Korea, the world’s top shipbuilding nation1 known for its advanced technological competitiveness and dominance in high-value, environmentally friendly shipbuilding orders, this partnership also represents GCMD’s first center-level partnership with a South Korean shipbuilding entity. This strategic alliance represents a major advancement in the development and uptake of low- and zero-carbon solutions in the maritime sector by bringing industry experts together to accomplish shared decarbonization objectives.
In order to demonstrate breakbulk and simulate bunkering activities between boats at anchorage in the Pilbara region, GCMD has successfully finished two ammonia transfers. When ammonia-fueled vessels become available, this achievement opens the door for evaluating the viability of ammonia bunkering in several ports. The ecosystem of partners in GCMD’s endeavor to allow important ports for this purpose will include Hanwha Ocean.
Together, GCMD and Hanwha Ocean are dedicated to helping the maritime sector meet the IMO’s goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Through pilots and trials, this new alliance will integrate and leverage Hanwha Ocean’s continuous advances in green shipping technologies with GCMD’s efforts to reduce acceptance hurdles for decarbonization solutions.
