In a significant step toward strengthening U.S.–Korea industrial ties, Chung Kisun, Executive Vice Chairman of HD Hyundai, held formal discussions with Jamieson Greer, U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), to explore avenues for strategic collaboration in the shipbuilding sector.
This historic meeting marks the first official dialogue between the USTR and South Korea’s shipbuilding industry. The talks were held during the USTR delegation’s visit to Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) trade ministers’ meeting.
Chung outlined HD Hyundai’s existing partnership with U.S. defense contractor Huntington Ingalls Industries, highlighting opportunities for expanding cooperation in areas such as joint technology development, advanced shipbuilding projects, and skilled workforce training initiatives. He stressed the increasing importance of a stronger industrial alliance between the two nations in an evolving global maritime landscape.
Additionally, Chung showcased the capabilities of HD Hyundai Samho—an affiliate specializing in crane manufacturing—and addressed the role South Korean companies could play in diversifying and stabilizing the U.S. port equipment supply chain, particularly in the field of port cranes.
“We are grateful for the United States’ ongoing commitment to revitalizing its shipbuilding industry,” Chung stated. “HD Hyundai is fully prepared to support this vision with our capabilities and expertise.”
Greer, who played a key role in U.S.-China trade negotiations during his tenure as Chief of Staff to Ambassador Robert Lighthizer under the Trump administration, expressed interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation to reinforce global supply chains and industrial resilience.
