JERA to perform first-ever truck-to-ship bunkering

Japan’s largest utility JERA has decided to implement truck-to-ship bunkering of ammonia to an ammonia-fuelled tugboat owned by NYK Line.

JERA has concluded a joint study agreement with NYK and Resonac aimed at achieving the world’s first bunkering of ammonia to ships. The Japanese company has now opted to supply ammonia to the A-Tug by tanker truck at the port of Yokohama beginning in late May 2024. This will be the world’s first example of truck-to-ship bunkering of ammonia.

The A-Tug is scheduled for delivery in June 2024. The company has concluded an ammonia bunkering agreement with Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Corporation, which will operate the A-Tug.

JERA said that it is building hydrogen and ammonia supply chains as it is striving towards hitting its objective of net zero CO2 emissions from domestic and overseas business operations by 2050.
