In 2023, Maersk’s ECO Delivery Ocean product resulted in more than 660,000 TEU transported on green fuels and a reduction of over 683,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases.
According to Maersk, this success is indicative of the increasing commitment from shippers to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from their logistics. Notable companies pioneering this effort include Nestlé, Inditex, Novo Nordisk, Volvo Cars, Flying Tiger Copenhagen, and Europris.
The ECO Delivery Ocean product, established in 2019, has been independently certified to reduce GHG emissions in ocean transport by more than 80%. The green fuels used, such as bio-diesel and green methanol, lead to significant GHG emission reductions of above 80%. Furthermore, the containers transported on green fuels in 2023 equal 3% of their global ocean transport volume.
Maersk is also investing in new methanol-enabled vessels, with the first eight very large ships entering the fleet in 2024. Maersk’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond ocean transport, with the launch of ECO Delivery Inland in 2023, utilizing electric trucks in select locations in the USA and piloting heavy-duty electric trucks in several countries.
