Wärtsilä to power world’s largest cement carrier for NovaAlgoma

Wärtsilä will supply a comprehensive propulsion package for the 38,000-dwt cement carrier ordered by NovaAlgoma, a joint venture between Canada’s Algoma Central Corporation and Nova Marine Group. The vessel, set to launch by the end of 2026, will be the world’s largest cement carrier and the first in its class to be methanol-fueled, supporting NovaAlgoma’s decarbonization goals.

Wärtsilä’s package includes two Wärtsilä 32 engines, a Wärtsilä 25 auxiliary engine, two gearboxes, controllable pitch propellers, a tunnel thruster, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, a propulsion control system, and shaft generators. Delivery of the equipment will begin in November 2025. The Wärtsilä 32 engine offers easy maintenance, long operating periods, and fuel flexibility, enabling future upgrades for methanol use.
