At Yangshan Port, the ship “Haigang Zhiyuan” successfully unloaded 3,000 tons of methanol for the “Anne Maersk” on January 1. This is the port’s first operation of such kind in 2025 and the beginning of routine methanol bunkering. Methanol is emerging as a significant alternative maritime fuel due to its low emissions. The first methanol bunkering ship at Shanghai Port, “Haigang Zhiyuan,” has 12 cargo tanks totaling 16,000 cubic meters in capacity. It supports container operations and allows ship-to-ship bunkering, increasing sustainability and efficiency.
The Yangshan Port MSA put in place extensive safety protocols and emergency procedures to guarantee safe operations. They worked closely with shipping companies, port operators, and pilot stations, keeping a careful eye on the entire process. There will be two more methanol operations in January after this successful bunkering. Yangshan Port will keep improving its methanol bunkering services, solidifying Shanghai’s standing as a global shipping gateway and green fuel hub.
