ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a design concept of a coastal liquefied CO2 carrier jointly developed by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Nippon Gas Line Co., Ltd. In building the CCS value chain, in addition to large ships transporting CO2 domestically and internationally, coastal vessels that collect CO2 from small-scale emission sites in Japan and transport it to base sites toward overseas storage sites play a crucial role, with demand expected to grow. This AiP represents a step toward realizing the supply of coastal liquefied CO2 carriers to meet such demand.
A concept study of this vessel was conducted in conjunction with the FY2024 ‘Japanese Advanced CCS Projects carried out by the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC).
ClassNK carried out a design review of the ship based on part N of its ‘Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships’, which incorporates the IGC Code, an international code for the construction and equipment of ships carrying liquefied gases such as liquefied CO2 and LNG in bulk. ClassNK issued AiP after it was confirmed that the prescribed requirements were met.
