GAIL (India) Ltd. has awarded a contract to an undisclosed company to set up a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer at its facility in Madhya Pradesh (MP).
The electrolysis unit, at GAIL’s Vijaipur Complex in Guna district, will be powered by 10 MW of renewables capacity. It will be commissioned by November 2023. It is expected to produce around 4.3 metric tons of hydrogen per day, with a purity of about 99.999% by volume.
In January, GAIL commenced India’s first project to mix hydrogen into the natural gas system. It is supplying hydrogen-blended natural gas to Avantika Gas Ltd., GAIL’s joint venture company with HPCL. Avantika Gas is a city gas distributiom company operating in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. GAIL has successfully blended up to 2% hydrogen in natural gas (by volume) in the CGD network.
