Leading air-cruise tour operator Antarctica21 announced a new partnership with HIF Global, a global pioneer in the manufacture of e-fuel.
Since Antarctica21 is the first cruise line to include synthetic fuel into its operations, this exclusive arrangement represents a major step towards sustainable tourism in Antarctica.
Because it is chemically identical to gasoline, E-Fuel, a synthetic fuel made from green hydrogen and recovered CO₂ using wind energy, presents a possible substitute. It supports worldwide decarbonization targets because it doesn’t require any changes to engines or existing infrastructure.
Antarctica21’s ambitious aim to transition its operations to exclusively use e-Fuels begins with this agreement. Antarctica21 and HIF Global signed a deal on October 25, 2024, at a ceremony in Punta Arenas, southern Chile, wherein Antarctica21’s flagship expedition vessel, Magellan Explorer, will test e-Gasoline for use in Zodiacs. In order to fully align the company’s fuel use with its sustainability objectives, Antarctica21 intends to extend the use of e-Fuels in the upcoming years to include synthetic marine gas oil (e-MGO) to power Magellan Explorer’s main engines and synthetic jet fuel for air operations.
The local e-fuel used in this collaboration comes from HIF Global’s Haru Oni facility in Punta Arenas, Chile’s Magallanes Region, where the company manufactures e-fuel for a range of industrial uses. Chile might become a major player in the global energy revolution because to the plant’s creative strategy.
