By being recognized by the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH) as an incentive provider on the Environment Ship Index (ESI) platform, Mormugao Port Authority has achieved international recognition. This accomplishment demonstrates the port’s dedication to encouraging eco-friendly procedures for seagoing ships.
In keeping with international initiatives to lower air pollution in shipping, Mormugao Port is the first port in India to implement Green Ship Incentives through the ESI. Ships that perform well environmentally are rewarded with savings on port fees through the port’s incentive program, “Harit Shrey,” which was introduced in October 2023 and is based on ESI scores.
Mormugao Port’s efforts to join the ESI Program and spread knowledge of green shipping incentives in the area were commended by the IAPH Secretary General in August 2024. Along with Japan and Oman, which provide comparable incentives, Mormugao stands unique in Asia.
Many ships have profited from the incentives designed to lower greenhouse gas emissions since the launch of the “Harit Shrey scheme.” The larger objective of attaining long-term emission reductions in maritime activities is supported by this program. The port authority has also highlighted its commitment to sustainable practices in its submission for the IAPH Sustainability Awards under the World Port Sustainability Programme (WPSP).
This honor establishes Mormugao Port as a major force in promoting environmentally friendly maritime operations, supporting global initiatives to cut carbon emissions, and improving air quality.
