Wireless EV charging supplier InductEV has been selected to provide high-power inductive charging for battery-electric cargo handling equipment at the International Transportation Service (ITS).
ITS, a port terminal operator managing container handling operations at the Port of Long Beach, has secured a US$3.3m grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to demonstrate “transformative charging technology solutions” tailored for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles. The ITS project, titled Hands-free Charging for Battery Electric Cargo Handling Equipment, is one of five initiatives which have been awarded a total of US$33m through a competitive CEC funding programme in 2024.
InductEV’s solution will enable wireless charging for five ITS battery-electric yard tractors while parked with five InductEV 150kW chargers, marking the company’s first installation at a West Coast port following a previous deployment at APM Terminals in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey.
InductEV’s high-power wireless charging system uses inductive charging pads, with an in-ground pad activating instantly when paired with an under-vehicle pad. The company’s systems range from 75 kW to 450 kW, requiring no additional real estate compared to wired chargers while improving driver safety through hands-free operation. Unlike traditional overnight wired charging, InductEV’s solution enables shorter, more frequent charging sessions throughout the day, reducing strain on power utilities and fleet operators while optimising the use of available clean energy.
