KBR has been awarded a conceptual study contract for floating blue ammonia production from South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).
The award is part of SHI’s diversification in the ocean energy business, with a focus on maritime technology. The study will utilize KBR’s blue ammonia technology suitable for offshore production and leverage SHI’s expertise in the design of large floating vessels.
KBR, a Houston-based engineering and construction services giant, stated that this concept would deliver a sustainable platform for its clients to achieve their energy transition objectives with greater flexibility.
KBR has been involved in ammonia technology for a very long time. Since 1943, KBR has licensed, engineered, or constructed over 260 grassroots ammonia plants worldwide.
In related news, KBR was awarded engineering contracts by Seatrium to develop topsides for an FPSO pair set to work for Petrobras less than a week ago. The units are being designed for Petrobras’ Atapu and Sepia fields in the Santos Basin, Brazil. Seatrium won the $8bn deal to build the FPSOs for Petrobras in late May.
