WB suggests carbon tax for shipping

A new 58-page report from the bank suggests a carbon tax in shipping alone could raise $40bn to $60bn each year between 2025 and 2050, money which could be used to speed the decarbonisation of the shipping industry as well as boosting port infrastructure, especially in developing countries.

US calls for stringent interim goals for shipping decarbonization

Sue Biniaz, the US deputy special envoy for climate, described July’s MEPC meeting as a “key moment” to create emissions reduction targets for the sector that align with the 1.5-degree goal.

France supports to form carbon levy coalition for shipping

France is attempting to assemble a coalition of dozens of nations to endorse the proposal and has received backing from Japan and Denmark among others.

IMO must take the bull by the horns

In the wake of this year’s Nor-Shipping, it was clear to me in all the conversations I had both on and off the record that momentum is growing across the industry to push for higher targets on decarbonization, faster technology development and improved efficiency throughout the value chain to tackle the climate crisis.

Rotor sails are credible option to tackle climate challenge

Wind propulsion is set to be front and centre at the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO’s) 80th Session of the Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) in July, which will examine the readiness and availability of low and zero-carbon technologies to reduce the shipping sector’s impact on global emissions and speed up global decarbonisation efforts.

MEPC 80 to target more shipping emissions

Shipping has faced significant pressure from regulators and NGOs alike to slash emissions, but new analysis from Clarksons Research places the industry’s carbon footprint in a different light.

IMO study ambitious on green targets for shipping

A study commissioned by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) shows that the hurdles regularly cited barring the way to shipping’s decarbonisation are all surmountable. The study, which has been sent to the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) which meets in London this July, potentially paves the way for member states to agree on more ambitious

Hutchison Ports BEST surpasses EU & IMO emission reduction targets

The Hutchison Ports BEST terminal in the Port of Barcelona is considered one of the greenest container terminals in the Mediterranean attributed to the design of its infrastructure and the way it conducts its operations. In addition, in 2022 it has eliminated scope 2 emissions by opting for electricity from 100% renewable energy.  Guillermo Belcastro,

Indian strategies to meet IMO decarbonization goals

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has set a target to reduce the shipping industry’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by the year 2050. The strategy is outlined by short, medium, and long-term ambitions. Even though, the Indian flagged vessels contribute comparatively fewer carbon emissions than foreign-flagged vessels, India as an important member of the

IMO calls for 2040 emission reduction target

Several member states contend that by setting an intermediate emission reduction target for 2040, the IMO will ensure that a more ambitious 2050 target is achievable, according to International Bunker Industry Association (IBIA). The International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) 14th Intersessional Working Group on Greenhouse Gases (ISWG GHG 14) meeting was held recently. Member states worked
