EPA proposes to increase use of ethanol and other biofuels

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed increasing ethanol and other biofuels that must be blended into the nation’s fuel supplies over the next three years. The announcement was welcomed by renewable fuel and farm groups but condemned by environmentalists and oil industry groups. The proposal also includes incentives for the use of biogas from

Biofuel production slightly dips in the US

US ethanol and biodiesel capacity were down slightly in July. Renewable diesel capacity, however, continued to expand and is poised to surpass operatable biodiesel capacity, according to data released by the US Energy Information Administration on Sept. 30. Feedstock consumption was up for the month. Total US operable biofuels production capacity reached 21.469 billion gallons

EPA discloses guidance on ethanol production

The U.S. EPA updated guidance that describes three additional ways ethanol plants that co-process corn kernel fiber and corn starch can demonstrate the resulting volume of cellulosic biofuel produced. The new guidance supplements guidance released in May 2019 that focused on quantifying an analytical method for determining the cellulosic converted fraction of corn kernel fiber

EPA’s renewable fuel standard to ethanol encourages US states to for it

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a final rule for the Renewable Fuel Standard June 3 that sets a goal of 15 billion gallons of conventional renewable fuels for 2022. Some Midwestern states are turning to higher blends of ethanol in hopes it will help them respond to rising fuel costs. Ohio Gov. Mike

Biofuel blending mandates for 2022 issued by US EPA

The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) set biofuel blending mandates for 2022 at 20.63 billion gallons and retroactive volume mandates for 2021 at 18.84 billion gallons and for 2020 at 17.13 billion gallons. EPA denied oil refiners’ exemption petitions, but said it would allow extra time for small refiners to meet their 2020 blending obligations.
