Resolving ship-owners’ dilemma

Ultimately, the final step in shipping’s journey towards decarbonisation will be the total use of zero-carbon fuels, either in whole or blended with conventional fuels or alternative power sources.

The confusion in choosing a future fuel

The challenge we have is that there are many different options and no consensus today on which of the sustainable fuels will be commercially available. Commercial availability depends on geographic location, national interests and legislations, and the availability of feedstock.

Wärtsilä delivers reductions in emissions to two MR tankers

The vessels, Elandra Sea and Elandra Star, owned by global energy company Vitol, and managed by Latvian operator LSC Group, had tailored Wärtsilä EnergoFlow and EnergoProFin systems installed during summer 2022.

Wärtsilä to carry out methanol conversions

During the conversion projects, which are scheduled to take place in 2025, engineers will modify the fuel supply system and engines, including adding automation for the engine control room. The new installations will be integrated with the ships’ existing systems

Engine manufacturers are eying huge business with retrofits

MAN estimates that 2,800 vessels with MAN two- and four stroke engines are eligible for conversion today and could save more than 97m tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually when run on green fuels.

Wärtsilä expands engine and service offerings

The 240-metre ferry Stena Germanica, with a capacity for 1,500 passengers and 300 cars, was retrofitted with a first-of-its-kind Wärtsilä 4-stroke engine that can run on methanol or traditional marine fuels back in 2015.

DNV approves Wärtsilä’s ammonia release mitigation system

The approval in principle covers its use on ships fuelled by ammonia with the DNV Class notation gas fuelled ammonia or on gas tankers fuelled by ammonia with the DNV Class notation GF NH3.

Corsica Ferries to seek optimal sustainability with Wärtsilä

Wärtsilä’s Fleet Decarbonisation Service is designed to tackle the challenge of environmental regulatory compliance.

Wärtsilä reliquefaction system selected for FSU retrofit

Wärtsilä is to supply the reliquefaction system for a retrofit project on an LNG carrier converted to operate as a floating storage unit (FSU). The vessel, the Energos Grand, is owned by Stamford, Conn., headquartered based operator Energos Infrastructure, and is being chartered by New Fortress Energy. The Wärtsilä Compact Reliq system allows the boil-off

Wärtsilä, to partner with DNV on emissions reporting

Wärtsilä is partnering with DNV to bring seamless connectivity between Wärtsilä’s Fleet Optimisation Solution (FOS) and DNV’s cloud platform Veracity. The integration will see Wärtsilä send real-time operational data with customer consent to Veracity, where it is quality assured and made ready for DNV’s verification services, making emissions compliance reporting more efficient for the partners’
