Valencia port to support ship electrification project

The project, which is being coordinated by the Tecnalia Research & Innovation Foundation and involves Fundación Valenciaport, has a budget of approximately 7.5 million euros and is partially funded by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency’s (CINEA) Horizon Europe program. In order to eliminate the need for transformers and cooling systems on ships, a small, modular system will be created to connect high-voltage grids on board.

By electrifying ships, increasing their competitiveness, and optimizing energy storage systems in terms of weight, operational dependability, and safety, the initiative ultimately aims to support the decarbonization of the industry.

Fundación Valenciaport, a consortium member, will assist in establishing the system’s needs and specifications, including conducting research in the Port of Valencia. Furthermore, it will work together to integrate the Harpooners solution into the various vessel types.
