TotalEnergies partners with Air Liquide to produce renewable hydrogen

TotalEnergies has partnered with Air Liquide to produce renewable hydrogen at its La Mède biorefinery in southeast France as part of its plan to decarbonise hydrogen used in its European refineries by 2030. The renewable hydrogen will be used at the biorefinery to produce biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The total investment for the renewable hydrogen production unit is €150 million, with production expected to begin in 2028.

This project is part of and will complement TotalEnergies’ broader commitment to decarbonise its operations, including its ongoing Masshylia green hydrogen production project in collaboration with ENGIE. Additionally, the company is also working alongside ENGIE towards the startup of the Masshylia project’s first 20 MW electrolyser in 2029, pending regulatory approval and subsidies.

In September 2023, TotalEnergies finalised an agreement with Air Liquide for the long-term supply of TotalEnergies’ refinery in Gonfreville, Normandy, France, with green and low-carbon hydrogen.
