Altair and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the development of eco-friendly marine engine technologies through artificial intelligence (AI) and simulation.
The agreement formalizes a long-standing collaboration between the two companies and aims to accelerate the evolution of next-generation marine engines by integrating advanced simulation tools and AI-powered solutions.
Driving Innovation in Marine Engineering
Pietro Cervellera, Senior Vice President of Aerospace and Defense at Altair, emphasized the broader significance of the collaboration: “This partnership isn’t just about advancing technology—it’s about shaping the future of marine engine innovation. By leveraging Altair’s global capabilities and HD Hyundai’s deep industry knowledge, we’re setting new benchmarks in sustainable engine design.”
HD Hyundai’s Engine Research Institute has already been working closely with Altair to enhance simulation technology for its HiMSEN engine line. With Altair now part of Siemens, this cooperation gains further momentum through integration with the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, combining simulation, AI, and industrial software into a powerful development ecosystem.
Meeting the Industry’s Environmental and Efficiency Demands
The maritime industry faces mounting pressure to meet increasingly strict environmental regulations. This partnership seeks to provide scalable, high-impact solutions to that challenge by applying digital technologies to marine engine design and development.
Dr. Sungchan An, Vice President and Head of the Engine Research Institute at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, noted, “Our collaboration with Altair has delivered significant improvements in high-quality engine designs. With Altair’s integration into Siemens, we expect even greater innovation in virtual product development and AI-based engine simulations.”
Key Areas of Collaboration
The MoU outlines joint efforts to:
- Develop advanced simulation platforms for optimizing eco-friendly marine engine design
- Apply AI tools to enhance engine performance and reduce emissions
- Implement predictive maintenance and diagnostics systems
- Improve safety through AI-based visualization and monitoring technologies
Accelerating Digital Transformation in Shipbuilding
Altair brings a proven track record in simulation-driven design and predictive analytics, having worked with top-tier shipbuilders around the globe. Through this partnership, Altair aims to support HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in reducing design lead times, boosting efficiency, and enhancing the performance of its sustainable engine technologies.
This alliance highlights the growing importance of digital engineering solutions in shipbuilding as the industry navigates a future focused on clean energy and smarter operations.
