Carbon capture solutions provider Carbon Clean has announced a new milestone in its work for Ørsted’s FlagshipONE e-methanol plant.
FlagashipONE is Europe’s largest e-methanol project designed for commercial use, and Carbon Clean is building the equipment for it.
The company announced that the very first pieces of equipment have been installed onto the metal frame of the initial unit, marking the start of assembling these carbon capture units.
Once fully operational, Carbon Clean’s technology will be able to capture 70,000 tons of biogenic CO2 annually for Ørsted’s facility located in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.
Carbon Clean’s CaptureX technology, designed for partially pre-assembled units, is being built at Schwartz Hautmont’s facility situated in the Port of Tarragona, Spain.
FlagshipONE is set to become Ørsted’s largest commercial-scale facility that converts power into various fuels (power-to-X) and the biggest e-methanol plant in Europe.
The project is anticipated to be up and running in 2025, producing up to 55,000 tons of methanol per year for ships.
FlagshipONE was developed by Liquid Wind, which has plans for constructing additional facilities in Nordic countries.

In February 2024, Liquid Wind joined forces with Alfa Laval, Carbon Clean, Siemens Energy, and Topsoe to open an eFuel Design & Performance Center (DPC) in Hørsholm, Denmark.
By working together and using the technologies and pre-assembled units from each partner, the DPC will create e-methanol plants that are ready to be built and can be manufactured, shipped, constructed, and commissioned much faster.
When used as fuel for ships, e-methanol significantly reduces carbon emissions by 94% compared to the fossil fuels currently used.
