Belgian shipping firm EXMAR has launched its first ammonia-fueled gas carrier from the HD Hyundai Mipo shipyard in South Korea. The vessel was launched on July 26 and is reported to be the first oceangoing gas carrier powered by ammonia.
With a cargo capacity of 46,000 cubic meters, the vessel is designed to transport liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and ammonia. It is equipped with a two-stroke ammonia engine (X52DF A) developed by marine engine manufacturer WinGD. The ship measures 190 meters in length and 30.4 meters in width and includes three cargo tanks for transporting various liquefied gases.
The vessel also incorporates technologies aimed at reducing emissions, including a shaft generator that harnesses the propulsion engine’s rotation to generate electricity and a selective catalytic reduction system to control nitrogen oxide emissions.
This ship is the first in a series of four ammonia-powered vessels being constructed for EXMAR at the same shipyard. Once completed, the vessels will be owned and operated by EXMAR LPG France, a subsidiary established in late 2024.
