Hyundai Heavy Industries – Engine & Machinery division has announced that it has completed the factory acceptance test (FAT) for the HiMSEN methanol dual-fuel engine H32DF-LM
The test on the four-stroke engine was conducted with Danish shipowner AP Møller-Maersk in the HiMSEN production factory in Ulsan, South Korea.
HHI-EMD reported the H32DF-LM engine, which “demonstrated excellent performance and quality”, is a 5,400-hp (4,027 kW) genset engine that selectively uses methanol and diesel fuel, and is characterised by significantly reducing emissions and greenhouse gases such as sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides.
The engine is designed to prevent corrosion with special materials and applies diesel cycle combustion and electronically controlled fuel injection methods in methanol mode to enable high-power operation in stable conditions.
HHI-EMD will supply the first HiMSEN methanol dual-fuel engine for Maerk’s 2,100-TEU carbon-neutral methanol container ship, which is under construction at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard. The box ship, which will be capable of burning green methanol, will be delivered H2 2023. The South Korean enginebuilder reported 50 methanol dual-fuel engines for 13 vessels have been ordered to date. HHI-EMD expects demand for the HiMSEN methanol dual-fuel engine will increase, driven by the shipping industry’s push towards decarbonisation.
