From applications submitted by six IITs, the National Institute of Technology (NIT), and the Indian Institute of Science, Education, and Research (IISER), the IIT Bombay and HSBC India Green Hydrogen Programme has selected six creative projects for further consideration. In line with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, the project aims to advance green hydrogen technology while tackling important issues in hydrogen generation, storage, transit, and use.
After a rigorous selection procedure, a steering group made up of prominent IIT Bombay academic members and industry experts chose the six projects. IIT Bombay will assist and nurture these projects till they are ready for the market.
The innovations include a locally designed multi-stack alkaline electrolyzer, indigenous hydrogen storage systems, and a sustainable burner offering alternatives to traditional combustion processes. The projects also focus on cost-effective hydrogen production methods, tools for safe hydrogen blending with natural gas, and high-efficiency hydrogen generators.
Unveiled in 2023, the National Green Hydrogen Mission seeks to create 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030, thereby lowering carbon dioxide emissions and boosting renewable energy capacity by 125 GW. Hydrogen is positioned by the mission as a strategic alternative fuel with a broad range of industrial applications.
Green hydrogen is seen to be essential for lowering emissions, diversifying energy sources, and generating employment in new green industries. It is anticipated that the six initiatives will make a substantial contribution to India’s endeavors to develop a strong green hydrogen economy.
