Microsoft Teams Up with NORDEN to Cut Maritime Supply Chain Emissions

Danish shipping company NORDEN has launched a pilot initiative with Microsoft aimed at reducing emissions across maritime supply chains. The project leverages NORDEN’s biofuel-powered voyages and its Book and Claim solution to address carbon output associated with sea freight.

Through this collaboration, Microsoft is expected to cut nearly 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e) from its Scope 3 maritime emissions over the next three years.

Anne Jensen, Chief Operating Officer at NORDEN, noted the strategic alignment between the two companies: “We are pleased to work with a like-minded partner in Microsoft, sharing our ambition to scale the use of low-carbon fuels to reduce emissions in the maritime industry. This partnership shows that we can support any company relying on ocean transport in lowering their supply chain emissions, even amid the current constraints on low-carbon fuel availability.”

The partnership also involves the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), which will help pilot enhancements to its established Book and Claim system. These updates aim to improve transparency and traceability in sustainable fuel reporting across the maritime sector.

Julia Fidler, Microsoft’s Lead for Environmental Sustainability – Fuel and Material Decarbonization, emphasized the broader impact of the initiative: “This project with NORDEN, alongside our work with the RSB, contributes to building the infrastructure necessary to lower our maritime supply chain emissions in a credible and transparent way, while supporting the development of sustainable marine fuels.”
