RAPTECH Cavitation Technology: Homogenisation for Future Marine Fuels

Cost-efficient and fast. With its UADA cavitation technology, German company RAPTECH offers homogenisation solutions for the production of alternative bunker fuels. Patented on Europe’s only UADA pilot plant.

UADA stands for Ultrasonic Acoustic Flow Aggregate. An inline module developed by RAPTECH that induces effects of cavitation – the implosive collapse of tiny gas- or vapour-filled bubbles in liquids – in a purely hydrodynamic manner. The UADA can be implemented as a plug & play solution in existing process plants.

Fuel emulsions through bubble implosion

High temperatures, pressures and shearing force are the physical effects of bubble implosions in the UADA. These homogenise fluids with low to high viscosity are finely homogenized having a particle size of less than 5 µm. RAPTECH technology can  emulsify, homogenize and blend biofuels with heavy Fuel Oil to produce stable ecofriendly, sustainable and cost effective alternative fuels for maritime industry.  and effectively mix O into water-emulsified future fuels. For bio- or waste-based bunker fuels, low-sulphur 30 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions

‘Bunker fuels processed in this way are environmentally friendly. Homogenised heavy fuel oil burns demonstrably cleaner with a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions like Nox, SOx and COx of up to 25-30 percent,’ says Rohit Surya Narayan, RAPTECH project engineer. In addition, a significant reduction in paraffin deposits is achieved, protecting ship engines. The UADA cavitation technology is space-saving, fast and meets high quality standards.

Europe’s only UADA pilot plant

RAPTECH has patented its UADA cavitation technology at its own UADA pilot plant, which is unique in Europe. Here, the cavitation experts offer modular turnkey solutions as well as R&D services for individual processes for refineries and fuel manufacturers.

‘Apart from simulating processes using computational fluid dynamics, we test them in practice with various process parameters,’ says Narayan. “Because cavitation,” he is convinced, ’can play a pivotal role in the future for fuel processing in the shipping sector.’
