TUI Cruises, the renowned cruise line, has successfully tested a biofuel blend named B30 on its cruise ship, MEIN SCHIFF 4. Derived from cooking oil, this eco-friendly fuel offers significant reductions in sulfur emissions and upto an impressive 90% cut in CO2 emissions compared to fossil fuels.
The sustainable fuel was supplied by Bunker One, a leading marine fuel supplier, and the bunkering took place at the port of AARHUS in Denmark. MEIN SCHIFF 4 visited AARHUS as part of its journey from Kiel to Spitsbergen and Geirangerfjord, with plans to utilize shore power during docking at Schleswig-Holstein, Alesund, and Bergen.
This biofuel test represents a crucial milestone in TUI Cruises’ ambitious 2030 sustainability strategy, aiming to reduce emissions by 27.5%. The company’s climate targets have received validation from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). TUI Cruises plans to achieve this goal by combining shore power and adopting clean fuels.
Additionally, TUI Cruises is investing in new builds and enhancing the performance of older ships through optimizations and the use of efficient fuels. The newbuild Mein Schiff 7 recently had its engine installed and is on track for completion by 2024.
