Hygenco Green Energies has launched Maharashtra’s inaugural green hydrogen and green oxygen production plant in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. The facility, named Project Photon Leap, is a key development in advancing India’s clean energy transition and industrial decarbonization goals.
The plant will supply green hydrogen and oxygen to Sterlite Technologies Limited’s (STL) glass preform manufacturing unit. This initiative supports STL’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2030.
Project Photon Leap is Hygenco’s third operational green hydrogen facility in India. It follows Project Heartland in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, commissioned in 2022, and Project Steel One in Hisar, Haryana, which became operational in 2024. With the commissioning of this latest facility, STL becomes the first optical fibre manufacturer globally to integrate 100 percent green hydrogen into its production processes.
Developed under a long-term offtake agreement, Hygenco will retain ownership and operational responsibilities of the plant. The facility incorporates advanced autonomous energy management systems, real-time monitoring capabilities and automated controls to ensure high levels of safety and operational efficiency.
Commenting on the development, Amit Bansal, CEO of Hygenco Green Energies, said the project demonstrates the transformative potential of green hydrogen in decarbonizing industrial operations in India. He emphasized that the collaboration with STL marks a notable step in shifting towards greener manufacturing practices.
Rahul Puri, CEO of STL’s Optical Networking Business, highlighted that adopting 100 percent green hydrogen in glass preform manufacturing sets a global precedent for decarbonization in the optical fibre sector. He said the partnership with Hygenco underlines STL’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and resilient industrial operations.
