Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) has initiated the continuous use of bio LNG fuel on its liquefied natural gas powered car carriers, marking a significant step in its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport. The fuel is being supplied by Titan Supply BV at the Port of Zeebrugge in Belgium.
The first vessel to be fueled with bio LNG was Daisy Leader on June 15, followed by Sumire Leader on July 18. This development reflects NYK’s broader decarbonization efforts, building on its experience in operating LNG fueled vessels and using alternative fuels such as biofuel.
NYK’s shift to bio LNG aligns with the company’s roadmap to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, a target outlined in its Decarbonization Story released in November 2023. The company views the adoption of cleaner fuels as a central component of its long term sustainability strategy. With this latest initiative, NYK is reinforcing its commitment to exploring and integrating environmentally responsible fuel options, aiming to contribute to a more sustainable future for global shipping.
