SAAM Towage Uruguay Offsets 100% of Scope 1 Emissions from Maneuvers

SAAM Towage Uruguay has completed the offsetting of 6,130 verified carbon units (VCUs), neutralizing all Scope 1 emissions generated by tug maneuvers in the country. The move forms part of the company’s broader sustainability strategy launched in 2022.

According to Country Manager Javiera Hevia, the initiative followed a structured process beginning with the measurement of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which was subsequently audited by Bureau Veritas. Alongside data verification, the company introduced operational measures to lower its environmental footprint, such as optimizing tug speed and enabling electrical connections between vessels and onshore power while docked.

For residual emissions, SAAM Towage Uruguay turned to carbon credits. The company selected the Montes del Este forestry project, part of the international Verified Carbon Standard program, which focuses on planting high-quality timber on degraded pastures in central-eastern Uruguay.

“This marks the conclusion of an important process and a foundation for future progress,” Hevia said, noting that the program integrates both reduction strategies and offsetting mechanisms to meet sustainability targets.
