Erik Thun launches fifth Lake Vänern Max vessel at Ferus Smit shipyard

Erik Thun AB has launched its latest vessel in the Lake Vänern Max series at the Ferus Smit shipyard in the Netherlands. The launching ceremony for the 5,100 dwt vessel, named Kolland, took place in Westerbroek on September 5, 2025.

Kolland is the fifth in a planned series of six vessels developed to enhance sustainable shipping in Northern Europe. The Swedish shipping company first introduced the Lake Vänern Max concept in August 2023.

The series represents the fourth generation of general cargo bulkers designed specifically for navigation through the Trollhättan canal and locks, connecting Sweden’s inland lakes with the North Sea near Gothenburg. The Iceclass 1B bulk carriers are built with two cargo holds.

The design incorporates several technical developments, including a nozzled propeller, reduced engine output, hybrid technology with a battery pack, and optimized bulb and transom shapes. The vessels are also equipped with closed bridge wings.
