MOL bulk carrier embarks on biofuel voyage for Anglo American

The Lambert Maru, a Capesize bulk carrier operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), has departed Singapore on a biofuel-powered voyage for global mining company Anglo American. The vessel took on biodiesel-blended marine fuel in Singapore on September 14 before beginning its journey.

MOL said the voyage is being conducted under the company’s Blue Action Net-Zero Alliance, a carbon insetting program framework launched earlier this year to support emission reductions in maritime transport. The greenhouse gas reduction value achieved during the voyage will be digitally certified and allocated to Anglo American. According to MOL, this enables the company to incorporate the results into integrated reports and Scope 3 emissions disclosures.

The vessel is operating on a B30 blend certified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC-EU). The fuel contains 30 percent biomass sourced from feedstocks such as waste cooking oil. MOL estimates the blend will reduce carbon dioxide emissions during navigation by about 30 percent compared with conventional fossil fuels.
