Montra Electric HCV (IPL Tech), the clean mobility division of the Murugappa Group, has inaugurated a new electric heavy commercial vehicle manufacturing plant in Manesar, Haryana. The facility is designed to strengthen India’s electric vehicle ecosystem and expand sustainable freight solutions.
The site covers 255,000 square feet of land with a built-up area of 150,000 square feet. It has an annual production capacity of 6,000 electric trucks on a two-shift basis, with provision to increase to 7,500 units through additional shifts.
A key highlight is India’s first all-women automated battery production unit, underscoring the company’s commitment to gender inclusivity. Robotics integration accounts for 60 percent of operations, supported by Industry 4.0 digital manufacturing systems.
The plant features in-house battery pack assembly capacity of 1.7 GWh and extensive testing infrastructure, including laboratories for electrical and electronic systems, quality assurance, battery pack cyclers, and component testing for brakes, wheels, and lighting. Research and development functions are embedded within the facility to support new product development.
As part of its localization strategy, Montra Electric aims to source 74 percent of components domestically, with the exception of imported battery cells. The facility will manufacture multiple models, including the Rhino EV series and upcoming product lines. Sustainability initiatives such as battery recycling, waste management, and on-site charging infrastructure have been incorporated, with future phases expected to include renewable energy integration.
Community engagement will also form part of the company’s operations, with local skill development and environmental initiatives planned.
“This facility marks a defining step in India’s transition to sustainable logistics. It combines scale, flexibility, and quality manufacturing capabilities,” said P.V. Satyanarayana, Chief Business Officer at Montra Electric HCV (IPL Tech).
The company is preparing to apply for benefits under the PM E-Drive Scheme and explore state-level incentives to support its expansion.
Montra Electric is part of TI Clean Mobility Private Limited (TICMPL), operating across four verticals: heavy commercial vehicles, mid and small commercial vehicles, last-mile three-wheelers, and electric tractors. Its heavy-duty portfolio includes the Rhino, India’s first 55-ton electric truck trailer, produced at the Manesar facility. The mid and small commercial vehicle division features the Eviator, a 3.5-ton vehicle designed for mid-mile and last-mile logistics. The last-mile range includes the Super Auto passenger vehicle and Super Cargo delivery solution, while the tractor segment offers the E-27, the country’s first electric tractor.
The Murugappa Group has committed ₹3,000 crore to its clean mobility business and targets $1 billion in revenue by 2029. The group has raised over ₹2,500 crore from investors including M&G Investments and GEF Capital Partners. With operations since 2022, Montra Electric employs over 3,000 people and has built a distribution network of more than 250 dealers across India.
The parent group, established 125 years ago, operates across agriculture, engineering, and financial services, reporting revenues of INR 902 billion and employing more than 94,000 people.
The launch of the Manesar facility aligns with India’s broader efforts to accelerate commercial vehicle electrification and reduce emissions in the logistics sector.
