AYK Energy to Power World’s First Fully Electric Intercontinental Fast Ferries

Hong Kong / Madrid, 8 October 2025 — AYK Energy, a marine battery manufacturer, has secured a contract to supply battery systems for the world’s first fully electric intercontinental fast ferries, in a project that marks a new milestone in maritime electrification.

The ferries, operated by Spanish shipping company Baleària, will connect Tarifa, Spain, and Tangier, Morocco, entirely on electric propulsion. The 18-mile route across the Strait of Gibraltar will become the first zero-emission international maritime transport link, with the vessels capable of reaching speeds of up to 26 knots.

Chris Kruger, Founder of AYK Energy, said:
“AYK is honored to be selected by Baleària as the provider of this advanced battery solution. Our high quality, safe and cost-effective solutions will enable Baleària’s ferries to operate with zero emissions and help meet one of the priorities of the Spanish government, namely the decarbonization of transport.”

Battery Technology and Vessel Design

Each catamaran, being built by Armon Shipyard, will be equipped with a 13.8 MWh battery system distributed across four electric propulsion units. The large-scale battery configuration will power vessels capable of carrying 804 passengers and 225 vehicles per voyage.

AYK Energy’s technology is based on Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which the company says provides enhanced safety, durability, and thermal stability compared to the Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) batteries commonly used in electric transport. LFP batteries are known for their longer lifecycle and lower risk of thermal runaway, making them particularly suitable for maritime environments.

Fast Charging and Operational Efficiency

To enable rapid turnaround times, the vessels will feature an automated recharging system using robotic arms installed at both the Tangier and Tarifa terminals. The system will allow the ferries’ high-capacity batteries to be fully recharged within 40 minutes, ensuring seamless operations and reduced downtime.

Pablo Garcia, New Projects Director at Baleària, commented:
“AYK’s advanced battery solutions will enable us for the first time to run an entire route using only electric energy and become a shining example of international transport sustainability.”

Accelerating Maritime Decarbonisation

The Baleària project underscores the growing trend toward zero-emission maritime transport, as operators worldwide adopt electric and hybrid propulsion to meet tightening emission regulations and sustainability targets.

AYK Energy said the contract strengthens its position as a supplier of large-scale marine battery systems, capable of supporting fully electric and hybrid vessels across international routes.
