Portsmouth, October 2025:
Brittany Ferries, in partnership with marine fuel supplier Titan, has completed the first bunkering of liquefied biomethane (LBM/bioLNG) for its new electric-hybrid ferry, Saint-Malo. The operation took place at Portsmouth International Port, marking a key step in integrating renewable fuels into the company’s hybrid fleet operations.
The bioLNG delivery was conducted using Titan’s bunkering barge Optimus during the vessel’s regular refuelling schedule. According to Brittany Ferries, the development represents “a concrete step forward in the company’s transition to cleaner maritime propulsion, combining LNG, electricity, and now bioLNG.”
Hybrid Ferry Integrates BioLNG into Energy Mix
The Saint-Malo is equipped with dual-fuel propulsion systems that allow it to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG), battery power, or a combination of both, offering greater flexibility in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
In a statement shared on social media, Titan said:
“This hybrid ferry operates on LNG, battery power or a combination to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With this LBM delivery, Titan is proud to support the sustainability goals of yet another customer who chooses to lead rather than wait.”
Advancing Low-Carbon Maritime Operations
The bioLNG delivery underscores a growing industry shift toward renewable and low-carbon fuels, as operators explore hybrid and alternative propulsion systems to meet decarbonisation targets under international maritime regulations.
Brittany Ferries plans to expand the use of bioLNG and electric propulsion across its fleet as part of its long-term sustainability strategy, aligning with broader efforts in the European maritime sector to reduce lifecycle emissions and improve energy efficiency.
