KLM Commissions New Electric Aircraft Tow Tractors at Schiphol

Key facts

  • KLM has introduced electric Goldhofer Phoenix AST2E tow tractors at Schiphol Airport
  • Tractors are leased through equipment provider TCR
  • Units can handle aircraft up to Boeing 777 size
  • Deployment supports KLM’s target of zero-emission ground operations by 2030

Overview
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has placed its first new electric aircraft tow tractors into operational service at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The deployment forms part of the airline’s wider programme to transition its ground handling operations to zero-emission equipment by 2030.

The tractors are Goldhofer Phoenix AST2E models and are supplied under a leasing arrangement with TCR. They are being introduced to replace diesel-powered tow tractors currently in use on the apron.

Operational capabilities
According to KLM, the electric Phoenix AST2E tractors provide broader operational flexibility than the airline’s existing electric units. The tractors are designed to perform both pushback and towing operations for a wide range of aircraft types, from smaller narrowbody aircraft to large widebody jets, including the Boeing 777.

Emissions and working environment
The new tractors operate without tailpipe emissions and generate lower noise levels compared with diesel-powered equipment. KLM noted that the vehicles also offer improved driver comfort, including upgraded suspension systems, which are intended to support a better working environment for ground staff.

The airline expects the introduction of the electric tow tractors to contribute to reduced local emissions and improved air quality in apron areas.
