TT-Line Orders Second LNG-Hybrid Green Ship 2.0 Ferry for Baltic Sea Operations

TT-Line has confirmed the order of a second Green Ship 2.0 ferry, expanding its next-generation fleet renewal programme with another LNG-hybrid vessel designed for future electrification and lower-emission operations in the Baltic Sea.

The newbuild, announced on 10 July, follows the company’s first Green Ship 2.0 order placed in late 2025. Both sister vessels will be constructed by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing, China, as part of TT-Line’s long-term strategy to modernise its passenger and freight fleet.

The first vessel is scheduled to enter service on the Baltic Sea before the summer of 2030.

LNG-Hybrid Ferries Designed for Future Electrification

Each Green Ship 2.0 ferry will feature an LNG-hybrid propulsion system combined with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery energy storage system with a capacity ranging from 5.5 MWh to 10 MWh.

TT-Line said the vessels have been designed with a scalable electrical architecture, including dedicated battery rooms that will allow additional battery capacity to be installed in the future, supporting a gradual transition towards fully electric operation.

The battery system will enable zero-emission and silent operation during port stays and manoeuvring, while advanced Power-Take-In (PTI) and Power-Take-Out (PTO) technologies will optimise onboard energy use, reduce peak power demand and improve operational flexibility.

Both ferries will also feature upgraded shore power systems capable of supporting high-capacity battery charging during port calls.

Increased Freight and Passenger Capacity

The new vessels are designed to carry up to 1,000 passengers and provide 5,400 lane metres of freight capacity, supporting growing demand for passenger and cargo transport across the Baltic Sea.

Passenger accommodation will include 300 cabins, alongside upgraded onboard facilities such as:

  • Family-friendly lounges
  • New cabin concepts for families, couples and truck drivers
  • Expanded restaurants and public lounges
  • Wellness area with sauna and jacuzzi
  • Children’s playground
  • Pet-friendly areas and dedicated dog zone
  • Redesigned sun deck
  • Improved crew facilities

The design builds on operational experience gained from TT-Line’s existing Green Ships, Nils Holgersson and Peter Pan.

Fleet Renewal Strategy

TT-Line said the second Green Ship 2.0 reinforces its long-term fleet renewal programme by combining increased transport capacity with lower emissions and greater operational efficiency.

Andreas Schärli, Chief Operating Officer of TT-Line, said:

“By adding a second Green Ship 2.0, we are accelerating the transformation of our fleet. The combination of LNG propulsion, large-scale battery technology and advanced shore power capabilities provides the flexibility needed to meet both today’s and tomorrow’s environmental challenges. With expandable battery capacity, both vessels are designed for fully electric operation in the future.”
