Kongsberg Maritime to Acquire Berg Propulsion to Expand Marine Propulsion Portfolio

Kongsberg Maritime has signed an agreement to acquire Swedish propulsion specialist Berg Propulsion AB, strengthening its position in the global marine propulsion market and expanding its portfolio of propulsion, hybrid and electrical systems.

The acquisition will broaden Kongsberg Maritime’s offering across a wider range of vessel types while enhancing its lifecycle service capabilities through Berg Propulsion’s established customer base and product portfolio.

Acquisition Expands Propulsion Capabilities

Berg Propulsion designs and manufactures integrated propulsion and electrical systems for commercial vessels and has established a strong presence in market segments including general cargo ships and product tankers. The company reported revenues of approximately €160 million in 2025 following several years of growth.

Kongsberg Maritime said the acquisition aligns with its long-term growth strategy by complementing its existing strength in high-performance and specialised vessel segments.

Per Håvard Siljan Hjukse, Executive Vice President, Propulsion & Handling at Kongsberg Maritime, said:

“This acquisition is central in our growth plan and strengthens our ability to serve a broader range of customers and vessel segments. Berg Propulsion complements our portfolio in a highly attractive way, and together we will deliver greater value through a wider offering, stronger lifecycle support, and shared expertise.”

Berg Propulsion to Operate as a Separate Brand

Following completion of the transaction, Berg Propulsion will continue to operate as an independent brand and standalone business unit within Kongsberg Maritime’s Propulsion & Handling division.

The companies said this structure is intended to preserve Berg Propulsion’s organisational culture, customer focus and operational agility while providing access to Kongsberg Maritime’s global resources and service network.

Philip Chaabane, CEO of Berg Propulsion, said:

“Joining forces with Kongsberg Maritime is an exciting opportunity for Berg Propulsion. Our businesses complement each other well, and together we can create new opportunities for our customers and employees. We look forward to contributing our strengths while also benefiting from Kongsberg Maritime’s global scale and aftermarket capabilities.”

Broader Product and Aftermarket Offering

The combined propulsion portfolio will include:

  • Controllable pitch propellers
  • Marine thrusters
  • Hybrid and electric propulsion systems
  • Integrated vessel control solutions

Kongsberg Maritime said the acquisition will also strengthen its aftermarket business by supporting Berg Propulsion’s installed fleet through its global service network.

The company expects to combine Berg Propulsion’s expertise in lean operations and execution with Kongsberg Maritime’s systems integration capabilities and international market presence.

Financial Performance

Berg Propulsion generated approximately €160 million in revenue during 2025, reflecting continued business growth.

Kongsberg Maritime, part of the Kongsberg Group, reported NOK 27.1 billion in revenue in 2025, representing 10% year-on-year growth compared with 2024.
