World’s First Fore-Accommodation LNG Carrier with Wind Challenger Receives LR Design Appraisal

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has granted Design Appraisal to a fore-accommodation LNG carrier concept developed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and equipped with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines’ (MOL) Wind Challenger hard-sail system.

The appraisal confirms that the vessel concept meets LR’s requirements for Wind-Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS) notation. The project was presented at Gastech 2026 in Bangkok.

The partners describe the design as the world’s first fore-accommodation LNG carrier configured to accommodate the Wind Challenger hard-sail system. The development involves LR, HHI, MOL and the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Maritime Administrator.

The latest milestone follows an Approval in Principle (AiP) issued by LR at Gastech 2025.

Fore-accommodation arrangement enables sail integration

The vessel design relocates the accommodation block and bridge to the forward section of the LNG carrier. This configuration creates additional clear deck space across the midship and aft areas for the installation of MOL’s Wind Challenger system.

According to the project partners, the arrangement provides greater flexibility in determining the number, size and positioning of the hard sails, with the aim of improving the vessel’s wind-assisted propulsion performance while maintaining navigational and operational requirements.

Technical assessment covers safety and vessel integration

The joint development project examined several technical considerations associated with installing wind-assisted propulsion technology on an LNG carrier.

The assessments included navigational visibility, hull stability, structural loads and stresses generated by the hard sails, and integration of Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems.

A Hazard Identification (HAZID) study and additional risk assessments were also carried out under LR’s Risk Based Certification process.

The Design Appraisal establishes that the proposed configuration complies with LR’s WAPS notation requirements for the safe application and operation of wind-assisted propulsion systems.

Four Wind Challenger sails planned

The concept has been designed to accommodate four Wind Challenger sails. MOL’s hard-sail technology is intended to provide wind-assisted propulsion alongside the vessel’s conventional propulsion system.

Project partners outline next steps
