IMO Forum Examines Spill Preparedness as Shipping Shifts to Alternative Fuels

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has brought together regulators, scientists, industry representatives and emergency responders in Singapore to examine pollution-response challenges associated with the growing use of alternative marine fuels.

The two-day IMO Research and Development (R&D) Forum, titled “From Fossil to Future: Marine Pollution Preparedness in the Age of Alternative Fuels”, was hosted by Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority, with support from China.

The Forum examined preparedness and response requirements for LNG, LPG, methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, biofuels and e-fuels. Participants considered how the different physical and chemical characteristics of these fuels could influence the nature of pollution incidents and the strategies required to respond to them.

Focus on Spill Behaviour and Emergency Response

Discussions covered spill fate and behaviour, modelling, risk assessment, emergency response, post-spill actions and international cooperation mechanisms.

Through technical presentations, case studies, panel discussions and interactive working sessions, participants shared research findings and operational experience to support the development of future pollution-response planning and preparedness measures.

As alternative fuels become more widely adopted in shipping, the Forum highlighted the need to understand how their characteristics may affect incident management and the effectiveness of existing response approaches.

Collaboration Identified as Key Preparedness Requirement

A key outcome of the Forum was recognition among participants of the need for stronger cooperation between governments, industry, academia and the scientific community.

Participants identified knowledge gaps that need to be addressed before major incidents occur and stressed the importance of continuing research into the behaviour and response requirements associated with alternative fuels.

The discussions also highlighted the role of operational experience and international cooperation in informing the development and improvement of response protocols for alternative marine fuels.

IMO Forum Held Alongside SpillAsia

The IMO R&D Forum was held alongside SpillAsia in Singapore, enabling participants to connect policy and research discussions with practical spill-response expertise.

The combined programme also provided an opportunity to identify areas requiring further research, operational development and international cooperation as the maritime industry continues its transition towards alternative fuels.
