LR Grants Approval in Principle to GasEntec for High-Capacity FSRU Concept

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) to GasEntec for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) concept designed to deliver up to one billion cubic feet of gas per day.

The approval follows LR’s independent assessment of the concept’s technical and safety fundamentals and was presented during Gastech 2026 in Bangkok. The proposed FSRU is designed around a modular architecture and combines high send-out capacity with multiple regasification operating modes.

FSRU designed for 1 billion cubic feet per day

The GasEntec concept is designed to provide a maximum send-out capacity of 1 billion cubic feet of gas per day, placing it among the higher-capacity FSRU concepts currently under development.

A key feature is its multi-mode regasification system, which can operate in open-loop, closed-loop and combined-loop configurations. The arrangement is intended to allow operators to adapt operations to different environmental conditions, regulatory requirements and project specifications.

The modular design can also be configured for different capacities, pressures and operating requirements.

Modular architecture targets deployment flexibility

GasEntec said the platform is intended to provide a common design that can be adapted to individual project requirements, potentially reducing the need for extensive project-specific engineering.

If developed and delivered as planned, the FSRU would rank among the largest units globally by gas send-out capacity while offering multiple regasification configurations.

GasEntec said the AiP will support further development of the concept towards execution and enable discussions with FSRU owners and developers on potential projects.

Jose Navarro, Global Gas Technology Director, Lloyd’s Register, said: “As developers look to bring LNG import capacity online quickly, operators need solutions that can perform reliably across different climates, weather conditions and regulatory environments. This design combines very high send-out capacity with operational flexibility, helping to address some of the key challenges facing future FSRU projects.”

LNG import projects increasingly focus on flexibility

Sean Van der Post, Global Offshore Business Director, Lloyd’s Register, said: “As countries seek secure and flexible routes to LNG supply, concepts such as this reflect how FSRU development is evolving beyond capacity alone, with greater emphasis on flexibility, adaptability and long-term operational resilience.

“By independently assessing new designs at an early stage, we help give developers, investors and operators confidence as they progress projects from concept towards deployment.”

TG Kim, Co-Chief Operating Officer at GasEntec, said: “This FSRU delivers a common modular platform that can be configured for different capacities, pressures and operating conditions, enabling efficient project specific engineering and faster deployment. As energy demand accelerates around the world, from grid growth to AI data center driven power needs, the constraint isn’t supply; it’s how quickly and reliably you can get gas to where it’s needed.”

The AiP provides an early-stage technical assessment rather than approval for construction or operation, with further engineering, regulatory and project-specific requirements to be addressed before deployment.
