RINA and Thailand’s national energy company PTT Public Company Limited have signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to explore research, technical cooperation and knowledge-sharing opportunities across the energy, industrial and maritime sectors.
The agreements were signed through the PTT Innovation Institute (PTT InI) and establish a framework for collaboration in areas linked to innovation, sustainability and technological development.
RINA, PTT to Explore Clean Energy Technologies
Under the agreements, RINA Consulting will contribute engineering and technical consultancy expertise, while RINA Services will provide capabilities in certification, verification, assurance and classification.
The collaboration will be managed in line with internationally recognised principles covering competence, impartiality and conflict-of-interest management.
RINA and PTT InI will examine potential research and technical cooperation in alternative and low-carbon fuels, Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), vessel electrification, digitalisation, carbon management and hydrogen readiness.
The companies will also explore cold energy utilisation, including potential applications in data centres and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). The framework also includes potential learning and training initiatives for the maritime and industrial sectors.
Focus on Maritime and Industrial Decarbonisation
The areas identified under the MoUs cover technologies and systems relevant to the transition towards lower-carbon energy and industrial operations. For the maritime sector, the proposed areas of cooperation include alternative fuels, vessel electrification, digital technologies and hydrogen-related applications.
Certification and verification are also expected to form part of the cooperation, particularly as emerging technologies move towards commercial deployment and require independent assessment and assurance.
Saverio Scopelliti, RINA Consulting Commercial Executive Vice President, said: “We are honoured to work with PTT and explore opportunities for technical cooperation in areas that are central to the energy transition. Through our engineering and advisory expertise, we aim to support innovation, technology development and the assessment of emerging solutions across the energy, industrial and maritime sectors.”
Pino Spadafora, Marine Market Development Vice President at RINA Services, said: “The energy transition requires robust and trusted frameworks for certification, verification and assurance. We look forward to sharing our experience in these areas and to supporting industry stakeholders through independent third-party services, delivered in accordance with internationally recognised principles of competence, impartiality and integrity. We believe that trusted assurance frameworks can contribute to the safe and reliable deployment of new technologies across key industries.”
The agreements provide a framework for the two organisations to assess potential areas of cooperation, with further activities subject to the feasibility and development of individual projects.
