BLG LOGISTICS has expanded its handling capabilities at the Bremerhaven car terminal with the addition of a new LHM 550 mobile harbour crane from Liebherr. The delivery is intended to support increasing transhipment demands for general cargo, heavy goods and project cargo at the North Sea port.
The crane is equipped with a 4.8-metre tower extension, allowing it to handle higher vessel profiles, and a 54-metre outreach that enables a broad operational range. With ten driven axles, the LHM 550 is designed for on-site mobility and can operate using shore power, aligning with BLG LOGISTICS’ efforts to reduce emissions at its terminals.
The Bremerhaven terminal already operates an LHM 400 crane. This latest addition follows other Liebherr models in use at BLG’s Bremen terminal, including an LHM 320 and another LHM 550. A fifth Liebherr mobile harbour crane is scheduled for delivery to Bremen before the end of the year.
According to BLG LOGISTICS, the acquisition is part of a wider plan to enhance heavy-duty cargo operations while improving adaptability in handling oversized and standard cargo. The procurement and configuration process involved multiple departments, including Technology, Terminal Operations, Sales and Purchasing.
Axel Krichel, COO and member of the executive board at BLG Group, stated that the new equipment supports operational scaling and site development.
Bremerhaven serves as a key automotive and RoRo transhipment point in Europe, integrated into the TEN-T core network and positioned to handle both transatlantic and intra-European trade. The port’s multimodal infrastructure and strategic location continue to drive its role in the logistics sector.
Commenting on the delivery, Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH, noted that the LHM 550 was developed with the logistical context of Bremerhaven in mind.
The partnership between Liebherr and BLG LOGISTICS reflects a broader industry shift toward equipping European logistics centres with technologies that can address rising throughput, decarbonisation targets and infrastructure upgrades.
