CMA CGM, a global leader in shipping and logistics, has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening maritime ties with India following a high-level meeting with Shri T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), at the Group’s global headquarters in Marseille.
The visit, held on June 12, builds on momentum generated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France in February, during which maritime cooperation with CMA CGM was identified as a strategic area for collaboration. During the recent engagement, senior CMA CGM executives briefed the Secretary on the company’s growing footprint across India’s shipping, logistics, shipbuilding, and maritime innovation sectors.
The Group outlined progress under its India-focused strategy, which is structured around five key pillars: expansion of Indian-flagged vessels, collaboration in shipbuilding, development of inland logistics, industrial investments in the maritime sector, and advancement in innovation and technology.
Among the highlights, CMA CGM has introduced its first Indian-flagged vessels — CC VITORIA and CC Manaus — and established a dedicated Indian shipping entity based in GIFT City, Gujarat. The company is also in advanced talks with Indian shipyards to co-develop LNG-powered container vessels, a move aimed at enhancing green shipbuilding capabilities.
Significant investment commitments were also discussed, including a $200 million expansion project at Nhava Sheva Freeport Terminal and CMA CGM’s participation in the upcoming Vadhavan Port development. In the logistics domain, the Group emphasized its role in enhancing multimodal infrastructure to support India’s inland trade corridors.
CMA CGM expressed interest in partnering with India’s ship recycling industry, especially in Alang, and exploring opportunities to source containers and green steel from domestic producers in alignment with international sustainability targets. The company currently employs over 2,200 digital specialists in India and is evaluating the launch of maritime R&D and innovation centers in key cities across the country.
The visiting delegation from CMA CGM included Patrice Bergamini, Diplomatic Advisor to the Group CEO and Chairman; Camille Andrews from the CEO’s Office; Ludovic Renou, Head of Global Shipping Network; Atit Mahajan, Managing Director, CMA CGM India; Antoine Canton, Project Manager for India Initiatives; and Agatha Bonnin, Public Affairs Specialist. The meeting underscored the shared ambition of enhancing maritime connectivity between India and Europe, fostering innovation, and supporting India’s long-term vision for its port and shipping ecosystem. It also reinforced India’s evolving role as a global maritime hub and its growing engagement with international industry leaders.
