COSCO Shipping Bulk, a subsidiary of China COSCO Shipping Corporation, has placed an order with Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. (DSIC), part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), for the construction of at least four clean fuel-ready bulk carriers. The agreement also includes options for up to ten additional vessels, signalling a potential major fleet expansion.
Contract Valued at Up to $1.08 Billion
Each vessel in the initial batch of four 210,000 DWT bulk carriers is priced at $77 million, bringing the confirmed contract value to $308 million. If COSCO Shipping Bulk moves forward with the full set of optional orders, the total investment could reach $1.08 billion.
Deliveries of the first vessels are expected to begin in 2028.
Clean Fuel-Ready Design Aligned With Future Regulations
According to broker reports from Intermodal, the newbuilds will be equipped with engines that can be converted to run on ammonia and/or methanol, two alternative marine fuels gaining traction as the industry prepares for more stringent emissions regulations.
The clean fuel-ready configuration is expected to position the vessels for long-term compliance with decarbonisation pathways, while enabling reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants.
The ships are projected to achieve substantial cuts in:
- GHG emissions
- Nitrogen oxides (NOx)
- Sulfur oxides (SOx)
- Particulate matter (PM)
The order reflects ongoing momentum in China’s large-scale newbuild programme and sustained interest in future-fuel-ready vessel designs.
