COSCO Shipping Lines has officially named its second methanol dual-fuel containership with a capacity of 16,000 TEUs. The vessel, COSCO Shipping Panama, was christened on July 18 at the COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry shipyard in Yangzhou, China.
The newbuild measures 366 meters in length and 51 meters in width, and it is capable of carrying up to 16,136 twenty-foot equivalent units. It is part of the company’s strategy to incorporate alternative fuels into its fleet as the shipping industry moves toward decarbonisation.
Equipped with an 11,000 cubic meter methanol storage tank, the vessel includes methanol dual-fuel marine boilers and methanol generator sets. This configuration enables flexible fuel use, allowing the ship to switch between conventional and methanol power depending on operational requirements.
The christening of COSCO Shipping Panama follows the introduction of the company’s first methanol dual-fuel vessel of the same class, as COSCO continues to expand its low-emission fleet.
