DP World Constanța has expanded its cargo-handling capabilities with the delivery of two electric Liebherr LHM 600 mobile harbour cranes, introducing tandem heavy-lift capacity of up to 400 tonnes and enhancing operational flexibility at Romania’s largest Black Sea terminal.
The LHM 600 units, supplied by Liebherr, are configured for synchronised tandem operations to support project cargo and heavy breakbulk movements. Each crane is primarily powered by an advanced electric drive system aimed at reducing energy consumption and emissions, with a diesel engine available as a backup to ensure continuity during power interruptions.
Heavy-lift capability with electric drive
The cranes are equipped with Liebherr’s Sycratronic assistance system, enabling controlled and synchronised movements during tandem lifts. Operators are supported by integrated 360-degree camera systems that provide full-surround visibility to improve situational awareness and safety during complex operations.
To accommodate high-capacity lifts, the cranes have been fitted with site-specific structural adaptations, including double supporting pads engineered to match the berth’s load-bearing characteristics. The configuration allows the cranes to switch between container handling, bulk operations using grabs, and heavy-lift assignments without compromising cycle times.
Expanding multipurpose operations at the Black Sea gateway
DP World Constanța operates the largest container terminal on the Black Sea and serves as a multimodal gateway for Eastern Europe, offering container, project cargo and Ro-Ro services with integrated road and rail connections. The addition of the LHM 600 cranes introduces a single platform capable of handling containers, bulk cargo and heavy lifts, supporting the terminal’s plans to develop new cargo streams.
Marian Drăgoi, General Manager at DP World Constanța, said:
“This project is more than an equipment acquisition. For the last 20 years, the Port of Constanța’s success has been built on continuous investment in modernization, digitalization and the diversification of our operational capacities. The new mobile harbour cranes will once again enable the port to respond to rapid developments in the operational and commercial environment.”
Project cargo and infrastructure readiness
The terminal is designed to handle oversized and heavy cargo such as wind turbine components and industrial machinery alongside containers and vehicles. Reinforced platforms and deep-water berths allow simultaneous operations and faster vessel turnaround, while the new cranes are expected to improve precision and safety for complex lifts.
