Genesee & Wyoming, and Zero Petroleum developing carbon-neutral diesel

Freightliner, a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming, and Zero Petroleum have jointly embarked on developing carbon-neutral diesel fuel for locomotives.

The main objective of the partnership is to transition to zero-carbon petroleum products for train propulsion by 2040 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Belgian Lineas is testing a biofuel-powered shunting locomotive

For Freightliner, this is a significant step in reducing its environmental footprint. While the company already utilizes electric traction for some of its transportation, it also operates a fleet of locomotives.

There are plans for a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2033, aiming for a 55% decrease, with the use of up to 26 million liters of alternative fuel.

Zero Petroleum, in turn, commits to building a plant within two years capable of meeting the demand for carbon-neutral fuel on such a scale.

This initiative will not only benefit Freightliner but also other companies seeking to reduce their carbon footprint.

Such collaboration is crucial not only from an ecological perspective but also in terms of economics and innovation.
