Italy-based Grimaldi Group has taken delivery of its second ammonia-ready pure car and truck carrier (PCTC), the Grande Tianjin.
The 9,000 car equivalent unit (CEU) vessel was named and delivered on 8 August at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding (SWS), part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The handover also marked SWS’s 600th vessel delivery.
The Grande Tianjin is scheduled to begin its maiden voyage on 19 August, transporting vehicles from Chinese new energy vehicle manufacturer Leapmotor to Europe.
The vessel features a low-consumption main engine, integrated energy-saving systems including a twisted rudder and rudder bulb with fins, and a medium-voltage shore power connection enabling zero-emission operations while in port.
It has also been assigned the Ammonia Ready notation by classification society RINA, indicating it can be converted to run on ammonia as a zero-carbon fuel in the future.
