HAV Group’s energy design and smart control systems division has been awarded a contract to deliver three advanced onshore charging stations for Norled, one of Norway’s leading ferry operators. The charging systems will be installed at the ports of Stokkvågen, Lovund, and Træna in Northern Norway, supporting Norled’s transition to more sustainable ferry operations.
The new charging infrastructure will serve Norled’s ferry routes between Stokkvågen-Lovund and Stokkvågen-Træna, which will be operated by three battery-hybrid vessels and one conventional ferry starting in 2027. The agreement, valued at approximately NOK 40 million, covers the delivery of complete, containerised charging stations that include transformers, switchboards, control and data collection systems, and the vessel interface charging plug.
Each 4MW DC charging station is based on a Megawatt Charging System (MCS), utilising a proprietary high-capacity connector typically used for large electric vehicles such as buses and trucks. The systems will be delivered in late 2026 and come housed in a pre-fabricated e-house that integrates directly with the local power grid.
HAV Group’s CEO, Gunnar Larsen, highlighted the continued momentum of the company’s onshore charging business, noting this contract brings their portfolio to a total of 30 installations. He also pointed to new legislation in Norway, effective January 2025, that mandates zero-emission solutions in publicly procured ferry services — a regulation expected to further boost demand for electrification technologies.
Construction of the four new hybrid ferries is being handled by Norwegian shipyard Tersan Leirvik. HAV Group subsidiary NES was previously awarded a NOK 200 million contract in May last year to supply key equipment for the vessels, including battery systems, power solutions, and navigation technology.
Siv Remøy-Vangen, Managing Director of HAV Group’s energy systems division, expressed pride in supporting both Tersan Leirvik and Norled on this project. “Delivering both onboard systems and onshore charging infrastructure demonstrates our capability as a full-service provider for maritime electrification,” she said.
This development underscores HAV Group’s growing influence in Norway’s green maritime transition, aligning with national goals to reduce emissions in the transport sector.
