Henkel Adhesive Technologies has initiated India’s first mid-haul commercial logistics operation using re-powered electric trucks, marking a significant step toward cleaner freight transport. This initiative is in collaboration with an integrated logistics provider that has partnered with an electric vehicle retrofitting solutions company.
The pilot operations have been launched on two routes linking key industrial corridors: Chennai to Pune, covering 1321 kilometers, and Pune to Halol, a distance of 713 kilometers. These routes aim to demonstrate the viability of electric trucks for long-distance logistics in the Indian context.
The re-powered electric trucks are fitted with an all-electric powertrain system, providing a driving range of approximately 250 kilometers per charge and capable of carrying payloads of up to 8 tons. On the Chennai to Pune route alone, each round trip is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 1212 kilograms, showcasing the significant environmental benefit of shifting away from conventional diesel-powered freight.
Henkel’s climate strategy places strong emphasis on decarbonizing logistics as part of its broader commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2045. The company has set targets to cut absolute emissions by at least 90 percent across Scope 1 and Scope 2 categories and to address 90 percent of Scope 3 emissions through targeted actions across the value chain. Efforts include integrating low-emission materials, advancing eco design principles, collaborating with suppliers, and adopting carbon-efficient logistics solutions. The introduction of re-powered electric trucks forms a crucial component of Henkel’s roadmap to reduce emissions across both upstream and downstream operations.
