IHI and Vopak Partner on Ammonia Terminal Development in Japan

IHI Corporation and Royal Vopak have signed a joint development agreement with plans to form a new joint venture focused on building and operating an ammonia terminal in Japan. The project aims to begin operations in the Japanese fiscal year 2030, contributing to the country’s efforts to establish a stable ammonia supply system as part of its broader decarbonization strategy.

The planned terminal will support the import, storage and distribution of ammonia for use in power generation and various industrial sectors. Ammonia is increasingly viewed as a key component in Japan’s clean energy future, serving both as a fuel and as a raw material that can help reduce carbon emissions across multiple industries.

Through this collaboration, Vopak will apply its global expertise in ammonia terminal engineering and operations. The company currently operates six ammonia storage sites worldwide. IHI Group, recognized as Japan’s leading manufacturer of ammonia storage tanks, will bring its knowledge in building out a clean ammonia value chain across the country.

The terminal is envisioned as a logistics hub for ammonia marine transportation and inland distribution, forming a critical link in the development of a reliable and efficient ammonia infrastructure network.

Kensuke Yamamoto, Executive Officer and General Manager of the Ammonia Value Chain Project at IHI, said the partnership reflects a shared commitment to Japan’s energy transition goals. “By combining the strengths and technologies of both companies, we aim to establish a safe and effective infrastructure that supports the shift toward a sustainable society,” he stated. Lars Schaumann, Managing Director of Vopak Japan, said the initiative aligns with Vopak’s long term growth strategy. “We are pleased to be working with IHI on this important development. It supports our focus on infrastructure that enables the energy transition and expands our footprint in ammonia storage globally,” he said.
